Patio Prices (updated for 2023)
"Outdoor living" may just be a buzzword to you, but there is no denying that the patio is often the hub of our backyard landscapes. Reading, napping, working, eating, playing all happen on the patio. And in the winter it may even do a little storage duty.
If you are ready for a new patio, then you probably want to know what that is going to cost. This post is meant as a very general guide. It is based on my experience here in Portland, OR.
Costs For Kinds of Patios:
The first step to determining the cost of your patio is to find out how big it is. What's the square footage of your patio? Need help? Use this square footage calculator.
Now, choose a material for your patio. Ross NW Watergardens built patios with gravel, decomposed granite, concrete, pavers, flagstone, and slate this year. Which one do you want?
Gravel. A gravel patio starts around $10 per square foot.
Decomposed granite is closer to $17 a square foot.
Concrete with a broom finish is $12-$18+ per square foot.
A modern sand finish to concrete adds at least $3 per square foot.
Paver patios are $20-$30+ a square foot.
A slate or flagstone patio, set on sand, is $35-$55 a square foot.
A slate or flagstone patio, set on concrete, is $50-$85 per square foot.
What factors can drive the price a patio above these ranges?
Access. If it is difficult to soil out, or materials in, then the price will reflect that.
Demolition. Tearing out your existing patio will cost extra.
Summer. Projects generally cost a little more during the busy season.
