Willamette Heights Landscape Design Build Project

by Ben Bowen

Japanese inspired + drought tolerant + shade tolerant + a working garden in the front yard. This is what my clients wanted and they are very happy with the finished garden, so it must be what they got!

About The Project:

The property, located on NW Thurman, is compact. We eliminated all the lawn and removed some hedges to maximize the available space. Front yard retaining walls, which feel more like curbs, allowed us to level the two sides of the yard. Corten raised beds were installed along the driveway to create a working garden that will look good even when it is empty.

Fences in smaller yards need to be attractive since there is no room to hide them. The neighborhood is fairly traditional so we stuck with a conservative fence design, but spaced the pickets out and used clear cedar for a refined look. The one gate is Japanese-inspired, with a stepping stone path leading to it.

The homeowners primarily use the door, which is accessed off the driveway. We used a quartzite flagstone to create a path that feels like part of the garden.
