Midcentury Modern Landscape in Raleigh Hills

by Ben Bowen

In SW Portland is a neighborhood full of Midcentury modern homes designed by Robert Rummer. Over the years we have worked on quite a few of these homes- but this was the first.

The front yard is a dramatic dry garden. It started out as decomposed granite, but after the owners got dogs it was switched over to granite chips. Boulders serve as islands and anchor plantings. In the backyard a poured in place concrete firepit is adjacent juniper walls that have been given a shou-sugi-ban finish. Horizontal slat fencing ties it all together.

The floorplan remains largely original with the exception of a covered doorway between the kitchen and living room…. Ben Bowen, owner of Ross NW Watergardens, and his team designed the updated landscaping in the front and back yards. These updates are an excellent example of how contemporary touches can complement mid-century design while honoring its unique aesthetic.
