Large Koi Pond in Vancouver, Washington

by Ben Bowen

This is the most challenging and fun water feature Ross NW Watergardens has ever tackled. The pond and stream sit inside and over the footprint of a massive swimming pool that had been abandoned in the 1980’s. We had to partially demo the walls (concrete 18” thick) so the pond could have some natural contours. To build the stream we first had to block off and fill a section of the pool, compacting every couple of inches so we wouldn’t have settling.

Once the koi pond was in place we designed and built a garden around it. Belgard pavers, basalt stepping stones, and horizontal slat screens all play major roles. And the focal point of the planting is two specimen Lace Leaf Maples that we removed from one client’s yard and then transplanted to this one.

Filtration is built into the pond in the form of a bottom filter and “bog skimmers”. The stream contains a large biofall and planting pockets. The large koi that call it home are happy and healthy.
